Home Security?

I've been thinking of installing a security system in the house. Representatives from different companies have come out over the past month and pitched their wares and services. Most of them charge far more than they're worth.

A friend of mine who lives in the Southern United States told me that there is a far simpler way to do it. He suggested that I put a pair of my used work boots (scuffed up) next to the door and that I roll up an edition of Guns & Ammo and put it in one of the boots.

For good effect, he further suggested that I get some really big dog food bowls and put them near the boots/magazine. On the door, I'm to put a note that reads, "Hey Bubba, Big Jim, Duke and Slim.  I went for more ammunition. Back in an hour.  Don't mess with the pit bulls -- they attacked the mailman this morning and messed him up real bad.  I don't think Killer took part in it but it was hard to tell from all the blood.  Anyway, I locked all four of 'em in the house.Better wait outside. 'Cooter'

He suggested I misspell some words on the note -- and promised that it works better than a "warning sign" that the place is protected by an alarm.

Or maybe put that wooden Beware of the .... sign out front that you have pictured on the right.

Good idea LL and great way for me to feel safe... on a students budget I could afford this! Please let me know how this works for you before I go out and try to buy someones work boots off them.

Darlin', just go to a second hand clothing store and buy a very old pair of work boots for $1.00 or something. An old dog bowl (big one with teeth marks) might also be available at the second hand store.

Ha ha!

Love it!

Actually, I work in the home security biz.

Alarms are really only good for one thing: making a lot of noise. This will deter some, but not the crack pros (and they're out there).

An alarm is also good in case of fire or carbon monoxide. A dispatcher can alert you to those even while you're away from the homestead.

But the average police response time (at least in SLC) is around 15mins. So...anything beyond the above is pure luck.

LL there's no fun in going to the second hand store to buy used work boots, there's some mighty handsome construction guys on the roads... but I'll have to wait until spring now. I sure hope my home is safe until then. :-)
