Dubai is a modern city with a twist. There is no sewage system that anyone would recognize as such. Sometime when you're building a monument city you forget the tiny bits of infrastructure that hold the whole thing together.
A lot of honey wagons are required to keep the whole system in motion in Dubai. A lot of curry, indeed.

A friend lived there for a year of so. He said it's nice to have LOTS of money there. There are also occasional really strange laws that pop up from time to time, to screw foreigners.
Might sound tempting for men, but women get the short end of the stick in all muslim countries. Not at all interested.
WoFat, wherever you live it's nicer if you're rich than if you're poor. I had a boss once (rich) who said, "I've been poor and I've been rich and rich is better."
Opus, there is a difference between Dubai and most modern cities. As I pointed out, the complete lack of a sewage system is but one of them.

Funny they don't have any terrorist strikes there - I'm guessing they know there would be a serious decrease in funding afterwards...

I urge you to be unreasonable. Reasonable people adapt themselves to the world. The unreasonable persist in trying to adapt the world to themselves, therefore all progress depends on unreasonable people.. I hope you don't mind me borrowing these lines from you, unreasonable as it may sound.
Dubai is just a pile of sand with a thin layer of bling in my book. I'm not impressed. I am impressed by the quote I'm borrowing from you. I'm less impressed by the fact that I thought the exact same thing in the year dot and you found a way to detect my brain waves and wrote in all down. I think.
Dubai is a sad place with mostly sad people in it. It's a temple of greed, dedicated to excess and as Azra points out, its also a city built on human misery.

OMG is right! The first few photos looked wonderful, even the twisted building, but I'll pass.

See the world... stay away from Dubai.
A lot is built on human misery.. I find it very hard to think of something that isn't. I guess that's why I read the news only once a month.
