There aren't many animals uglier than hippos.
But even I have to admit that this one is cute as a bug's ear.**

However when they get a bit older, and "long in the tooth", the genes kick in and the whole cute factor fades - and stereotypes kick in. I've been told that they make poor house pets as adults. Adult Hippos can out run many humans (20 mph burst speed).
They live in Africa and in Colombia, South America (introduced into the wild by Pablo Escobar).
** I've never actually seen a bugs ear,
but people say that they are cute, so I'm running with it.

Young + Ugly = Cute.
The baby is so cute, I totally agree but the cuteness sure wears off in a quick hurry. That's amazing they can run that fast, something I never knew and I'm sure this info will come in handy if I'm ever up against a hippo!
WoFat - I think that's what they said about me as a child.
Darlin - Hippos are one of the few animals that can be introduced into a crocodile infested river - and they will sweep it clean of crocs. However as babies, they are in a different category.
I'm afraid none of us survive the cute stage once we cross that line into old age....
LL I'm so glad you're a wealth of information, if I ever move to Florida I'll ensure to buy a place which comes with it's own hippo. ;-) Hmmmm Florida, heat, no snow... this is getting mighty tempting!
Hi LL, that was a cute baby hippo...most baby animals are very cute. I don't think I'd want an adult hippo as a pet, even if they looked better.
Cute as a bugs ear, that is a funny saying, I wonder how that got invented years ago?
Have a fun week, and thanks for the kind words over at Opie's place ;-)
AB - I wonder how your cat would get along with a baby hippo?
Quite cute, those baby Hippos.
And yeah you're right, we have many Hippos here - some of them are even animals!
The chocolate eating hippos are more dangerous than the sort that wallow in the swamps.
